"Under The Queen's Umbrella" reached its climax when Doctor Kwon was revealed to be the deposed prince, Yi Ik Hyeon. The queen trusted Kwon in the past, but he killed her son, and now she finds out that he was the prince and killed the crown prince for revenge, and also learned that he had planned a rebellion against the king.

spoilers ahead

Who Kills Deposed Prince Ik Hyeon?

The Queen catches Doctor Kwon in the act while looking for Prince Taein's autopsy report. The queen tells Kwon that she knows his true identity and asks why he killed her son. Kwon has a simple motive: it's revenge. His brother was poisoned to death because of the king; therefore, the king's son deserved to die. Kwon apologizes to the Queen for taking the innocent Crown Prince's life, but Kwon's mother has suffered the loss of four of her children and cannot bear to see the Queen happy with her children. The queen's guards are ready to arrest Kwon, but he manages to get away from them because he knows every corner of the palace. The guards looked for him everywhere and even broke into the rebels' hideout. The Queen informs the King that she has always suspected Kwon of poisoning her son, but is now certain as Kwon is the deposed Prince. The Queen asks the King to reveal the truth behind Prince Taein's death if she wants justice for her son.

Kwon has taken refuge in Prince Uiseong's house and threatens to reveal that Uiseong was also part of the rebellion if he denounces her. Kwon assures Uiseong that he still has a chance to become crown prince. All he has to do is get Kwon inside the palace. Prince Uiseong has no choice but to join him and promises to grant Kwon one wish if he becomes Crown Prince. Kwon's wish is to live with his mother and son in his original house.

The queen didn't tell the king that she has Prince Taein's autopsy report because then the king will kill Kwon immediately without letting the queen prove that Kwon killed her son. The king visits Master Toji, who has been arrested for rebellion, and asks about Kwon's whereabouts, but Touji only has to say that the king's kingdom is not prosperous because the king does not deserve the throne. The king gives the order to find and kill Kwon only after receiving the autopsy report from him. The only person who can beat the king in the palace is the dowager queen, and if the queen has to use her to get what she wants, she will. The Queen tells the Dowager Queen that Kwon killed Doctor Cho and that she may be her next target because he is the deposed Prince Ik Hyeon. He also tells her that he has Prince Taein's autopsy report and threatens to reveal it. However, the Queen Dowager can get the result of the autopsy if she brings Kwon alive to the Queen. This is the first time the Queen Dowager has actually been threatened by the Queen.

The Crown Princess has fainted, but the Royal Doctor finds it difficult to diagnose her illness due to her slow pulse. However, after much effort, he concludes that the Crown Princess is pregnant. The palace rejoices to soon have a new grand heir after the previous crown prince's family left the palace. The consorts choose to visit the Crown Princess over Consort Hwang, who has invited them to tea, showing Hwang's dwindling influence over the other consorts. The consorts are excited, especially Ko and Tae, who have moved closer to the queen. The Queen told the Crown Prince to pay more attention to the Crown Princess than to other trivial matters, including Doctor Kwon. The Crown Prince reads a poem to the Princess and puts her to sleep. He finds the princess diary and reads the things she wants to experience with the prince. The prince promises her in a dream that he will fulfill all her wishes. The next day, the court ladies see the Crown Princess running around the palace and spread rumors that she is not really pregnant.

The Queen Dowager visits the Queen and also asks the Crown Prince and Princess to meet them. She calls the royal doctor, who tells them that he was mistaken about the pregnancy due to the princess's heart condition. The Dowager Queen mentions that the Crown Princess will never be able to conceive a child due to illness and calls her father, Minister Yoon. She proposes to depose the Crown Princess, but the Queen is in favor of the Princess. The Crown Prince assures the Princess that it's okay if she never manages to conceive. The Queen Dowager wants to overthrow the Crown Prince anyway, which is why she threatens the Royal Doctor to force him to lie. She ordered him to secretly give the abortion medicine to the Crown Princess and ensure that she never conceived again. The Queen knows that the Queen Dowager is after the Crown Princess because of the autopsy report. She gives him the report when the Queen Dowager brings up the subject of the Crown Princess' deposition before the King.

The queen's remaining hope lies in the gajasachon Park Gyeongu, but he informs her that he has given it to the king to destroy, as it may shake the kingdom to its foundations. Nothing goes right for the queen, and Kwon is nowhere to be seen either. He finds his mother, who had fled, but also has no idea where her son is. On the other hand, the queen dowager asks the chief advisor to take Kwon from Prince Uiseong's house to the palace. She doesn't tell the chief that Kwon is the deposed prince. The chief advisor takes Kwon to the palace with a promise to help him, but guards surround them. However, Kwon escapes by putting a knife to the chief's neck. He takes the boss away and kills him with a knife in the stomach. Her next target is the Dowager Queen, but she already knew this could happen and fled her chambers. Consort Hwang rushes to see Kwon and hears him say that he only used Hwang to raise his heir in the palace. Hwang is heartbroken, but his son, Prince Uiseong, arrives and kills Kwon with a sword to save himself from accusations of treason. Before taking his last breath, Kwon tells Uiseong that he is his real father.

Does the king reveal the truth behind Prince Taein's death?

Court officials appealed to the king to execute all rebels, including the deposed queen and Prince Uiseong. The king does not want to stain his throne with blood again, he is against the idea and even defies the queen dowager. The Dowager Queen tells him that his biggest mistake was letting Ik Hyeon live, and believes that the King should not repeat his mistake by letting the rebels live. That's when she reveals that Uiseong is Ik Hyeon's son and not hers. The queen dowager doesn't care about the king, but she cares about the queen. She knows how determined the queen is, and she still wouldn't let Prince Taein's case go. That's why the queen dowager needs to add more obstacles to her path. The royal physician tells the Dowager Queen that the Crown Princess' fetus has miscarried and she will never conceive again. Also, the Queen Dowager's court lady discovers that Prince Muan is secretly raising a baby in the palace. The dowager queen informs the king and asks him to get rid of the lowly born illegitimate baby. However, Prince Muan is adamant to take responsibility for the mother and baby and is even ready to marry Cho Wol. The Queen Dowager tells him that a Prince cannot marry someone of low birth, but the Queen announces that Prince Muan may be the first to break tradition, and the King supports her.

Furthermore, the queen exposes the queen dowager in front of her, making the royal doctor confess to what the queen dowager asked him to do. The doctor did not dare to give the princess the wrong medicine, and therefore her baby is still safe. The Crown Prince tries to convince the King to reveal the truth about Prince Taein, but the King is still unsure. However, no one knows the king better than the queen. The queen knows how anxious the king has been since he ascended the throne because he always wanted to prove himself. She assures him that no one will question the validity of his throne because he has always been a wise king. It's time for you to let go of that burden and let the truth come into the world. The King thinks about it and tells the Dowager Queen that he has decided to reveal the true reason for Prince Taein's death. The king announces to his court officials that there will be a new investigation into Prince Taein's death and that history will be rewritten by historian Park's son, Park Gyeongu. Court officials are opposed to the idea as it could cause an uproar in the kingdom, but the king is certain of his decision. After confirming that Prince Taein has been poisoned to death, the king announces that he will reinstate the deposed Queen Yoon, while she will be confined, and no one will be allowed to find her. This pretty much means the Queen Dowager is being deposed. However, the Dowager Queen cannot live like that and takes her own life while wearing her coronation outfit.

'Under the Queen's Umbrella' ending explained

The palace is at peace now that the crown prince can walk around the palace with his princess and fulfill all her wishes. The previous Crown Princess has returned to the palace with her children, and Prince Muan lives outside the palace with his family. However, he visits the palace so often that it seems he still lives there. Prince Gye Seong makes the decision to leave the palace to embrace his identity as a woman, and even though the queen doesn't want to let her son go, she still supports him because nothing matters more than his happiness. All of the queen's children have settled down, but her youngest son, Grand Prince Ilyeong, still needs to grow up.

"Under The Queen's Umbrella" had everything a historical drama has: politics, conspiracy, tradition, betrayal and more, but what sets the series apart is the vision of the king and queen. The Queen was open-minded, non-judgmental and progressive. Like her, her children broke many oppressive traditions. The king was always busy with the politics of his kingdom, but he made time for his family and accepted and supported whatever his sons decided to do.
